This program is designed to teach children about aquatic fitness through lap swimming.  This is NOT a replacement for swim lessons and participants must be able to swim the length of the pool comfortably in freestyle and backstroke.  Swim caps and goggles are strongly recommended for this program.  Swimmers will perform the 4 competitive strokes during this program.

Children ages 6 months to 3 years, along with their caregiver, discover the water environment and how to safely enter and exit the pool.  Additional skills demonstrated include bubble blowing, floating, rolling over from front to back and back to front, and front and back glide.  A swim diaper is required. Each child requires an adult in the water with them.

This program offers children their first experience in the pool without caregiver assistance.  Children learn skills that are the basic building blocks of swimming.  Classes are taught within the guidelines set up by the YMCA of the USA.  Program elements include personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water sports and games, and rescue.  There are no makeups for missed classes.

Perfect for those looking for a private instructor or an opportunity for families to participate in lessons together.  Only one swimmer needs to register if a sibling/family member from the same household is joining.  Lessons are registered for as a regular part of our registration process.  A membership at the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA is required to participate in private swim lessons.

Our goal is to develop competent and confident swimmers.  Children are introduced to the water through a graduated series of lessons developed and standardized by the YMCA of the USA.  The classes are divided by each swimmers ability and children move through levels at their own pace as their abilities and skills grow.  There are no makeups for missed classes.

This program is a small group setting of 1-2 students per instructor.  The program is similar to our Special Needs Buddy swim, but geared towards the older 13+ population.   Parents/guardians will be asked what the needs are of their swimmer to help us create the best experience. Swimming can boost physical activity levels, develop self-confidence, and teach a life saving skill.

These small group lessons are available for adults who would like to learn to swim or work on their current swim skills.  Adults may also sign up for private swim lessons if desired.
